2023 Brake Safety Week

August 20-26 2023

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) scheduled the Brake Safety Week for August 20-26 with a major focus on brake lining/pad violations. CVSA will be stressing the importance braking systems and removing any vehicles they deem unsafe from the road via roadside inspections. Due to this, be aware that you may be stopped more this week than any other time of the year. Any inspections resulting in a violation will affect a carrier's CSA rating.

Directly from the CVSA they will be:

  • Checking for missing, non-functioning, loose or cracked parts.
  • Checking for contaminated, worn, cracked and missing linings or pads.
  • Checking for S-cam flipover.
  • Listening for audible air leaks around brake components and lines.
  • Checking that slack adjusters are the same length (from center of S-cam to center of clevis pin) and the air chambers on each axle are the same size.
  • Ensuring the brake system maintains air pressure between 90-100 psi (620-690 kPa) and measure pushrod travel.
  • Inspecting for non-manufactured holes (e.g., rust holes, holes created by rubbing or friction, etc.) and broken springs in the spring brake housing section of the parking brake.
  • Inspecting required brake system warning devices, such as anti-lock braking system (ABS) malfunction lamp(s) and low air-pressure warning devices.
  • Inspecting the tractor protection system, including the bleedback system on the trailer.
  • Ensuring the breakaway system is operable on the trailer.
